Welcome to Year One

Welcome to Year One. The class teachers are Miss Westwood and Mrs Davison. Supporting the classes in Year One this year are Mrs Shakespeare, Mrs Hanley and Mrs Casey.

This term our topic is 'Into the Woods'. The children will be learning about Traditional Tales in English. In Science lessons, they will learn about the parts of a plant before moving on to identify evergreen and decidious trees. This term our Art learning will be based around the work of Andy Goldsworthy. He used materials found outdoors to create pieces of Art and this is something the children might enjoy experimenting with in the garden or at the park!

In PE this term the children will be learning and practising ball skills with their class teacher and will be learning a dance with Miss Saunt. PE is on a Tuesday and Thiursday, please ensure that children have their PE kit in school and tape to cover earrings.

Yeaaint tools on the computer this term. This will include using a brush, a pen and filling in spaces before saving and retrieving their work.

In Geography, children will be expanding their vocabulary and using this to discuss features of different landscapes.

Later in the term the children will be exploring historical buildings in our local area, starting with our own school and then exploring the area around school to find features of historical buildings.

Year One will all take part in daily phonics lessons to help with their reading of phase 3 and 5 sounds. They will receive a spelling letter each half term and these will be tested every Friday.

Children have a weekly guided reading lesson, where they work in a small group with an adult to read and explore a text. Alongside this, children will be heard read with an adult in the class but we do ask that children read at home at least three times a week. Children are rewarded in class for the reading they complete at home.

Homework has already been sent home. You may have recieved a leaflet regarding this. In there are 50 things to do outside of school, these are fun to complete and we can't wait to hear which activities the children have completed!
