Phonics and Reading

Phonics and useful websites

In Year One there is a big push on phonics and reading, the expectations are high because in June all children have to complete a phonics assessment. This involves reaidng both 'real' words and 'alien' words using phase 3,4 and 5 sounds. There are a range of phonics websites that you can use to support your child wiht their phonics progress including some that can support reading alien words. (Poop Deck phonics - a combination of real and alien words) (An array of different games that you can play)

If you have any questions about phonics then please speak to your child's class teacher.

Every child is heard read by an adult in school once a week and we would like to encourage all parents to try to hear their child read three times a week. We love reading parents comments in home reading logs so please write in these so that we know how your child is getting on at home. There is also a section in the reading logs where you can write notes to your child;s class teacher, we will check these every Friday.

Children can change their book every morning before register.

We will carry out a reading assessment at the beginning of every half term which will determine if your child is ready to move up to the next book band level.

If you want any more information about how you can help your child read at home then please speack to your child's class teacher.
