Welcome to Year 6!

Welcome back after the summer holidays! We hope you had a lovely break and are looking forward to your final, exciting year at Highfields!

Our theme this term is "Who lives in a place like this?”. We will be learning all about different animals and environments and how animals have evolved and adapted to suit their needs. We will also be looking at how environments are suited to different types of animals.

Important dates

Friday 15th September - E-Safety workshop

Friday 3rd November – Trip to Chester Zoo

Friday 20th October – Break up for half term

You should be informed of additional dates by letter but if you are unsure please ask the school office.

Curriculum Subjects Focus

English – We will start the term by reading part of ‘The Hunger Games’. We will be considering characters feelings and emotions and how the author uses certain techniques effectively. We will also look at this in relation to the rights of a child as part of our Rights Respecting Schools sessions.

Maths – We will focus on skills such as problem solving, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value and decimals.

Where possible, please encourage your child to complete Maths and English tasks at home to help to prepare them as much as possible for their SATs tests.

Science - We will be learning about human and other animal changes during their lives and why these changes happen. We will also be focusing on how living things are classified. We will consider how animals have evolved over time and how they have adapted to survive in their environment.

PE – We are learning the rules of football. We will start off by looking at basic skills building up the playing the game in teams. During Miss Saunt's PE lessons, we will be creating our topic based dance.

The Arts – We will be creating animal line drawings and detailed sketches of different environments. We will then transfer these skills to canvas. As part of our English lessons, we will complete drama based activities such as hot seating.

Humanities – We will be focusing on geographical features of environments and the position and significance of certain terms such as longitude, latitude and the equator.

ICT - We will be learning how to use spreadsheets to create, change and modify formulas to create an information database. We will also be focusingon E-Safety at the start of the half term.

In year 6, Reading is going to become a focus and we ask that children read daily at home and record this in their home-school diary. This will be monitored weekly by us and children reading regularly at home (a minimum of 3 times a week) will be awarded with house points. Any child who has read every day of the week will be rewarded and their achievement shared with the class.

For your information...

PE: Our PE sessions this half term will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays where possible; but please make sure correct PE kit is in school every day as the timetable sometimes varies from week to week.

Spellings: Children should have come home with spellings for Aut 1 labelled for each week, please encourage them to practise these at home as they will be tested on them weekly.

Homework:  Homework will be set on a weekly basis on a Friday. This is to be returned to school on or before the following Wednesday. Homework is to be completed in homework books when possible. If children would like to use ICT to present their homework, this is fine as long as it is still handed in to their class teacher. Homework topics may change weekly, as we are trying to consolidate our class learning as best as possible.

If you have any questions about the year ahead, please do not hesitate to contact any of the Year 6 team.
