January and February's School Values

During January, our school value was Friendship. We drew pictures of our friends and talked about what makes a good friend.

February's school value is Respect. We talked about what respect looks like at school, at home and how we can show respect for ourselves and for others. We read the story 'Giraffes Can't Dance'.

Please see below some ideas that you could use at home, to learn about respect:

•Brainstorm responses to the question, What does "respect" mean to me? Will they mention the "Golden Rule-- treat others the way you would like to be treated -- as a simple definition of the word?
•Make a list of synonyms for the word respect. For example, esteem, honour, regard, value, cherish, appreciate, admire, praise, Compliment.
•Read The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss A classic tale of discrimination; the Sneetches must learn the hard way that—no matter what their appearance—they are alike and should treat each other with kindness.
