Welcome to Year 3!

Welcome to Year 3!

Welcome back after the Summer holidays, we hope you had a lovely break. We are looking forward to an exciting term!

Our topic this term is the Stone Age. We will learn about life in the Stone Age and how it changed and developed over time.

We will also enjoy a trip to Creswell Crags on Friday 3rd November where we will explore Stone Age life through a range of hands on activities led by an Activity Leader in the Creswell Crags grounds. Children will take part in a range of activities such as learning basic bushcraft skills and becoming an amateur archaeologist and digging up “ancient artefacts”. We will also visit Robin Hood Cave, the largest cave of Creswell Crags. Our guide will lead us on an exciting tour of this important archaeological site - the home of ancient people and ferocious beasts and we will learn all about the lives of our ancestors from 55—10,000 years ago.

Important Dates

Friday 3rd November - Trip to Creswell Crags

Curriculum Subjects Focus

Literacy - We will be starting this term by focussing on stories. We will be reading Stone Age Boy and Stig of the Dump. Then we will have the chance to come up with our own stories based on these texts. Following this, we will move on to explanation texts and write about how fossils are formed, which will link with our learning in Science.

Numeracy  - Numeracy lessons will focus on place value, such as knowing the value of digits in numbers to 1000 and adding and subtracting multiples of 10. We will also work on our mental maths: in particular the  3, 4 and 8 times tables and mentally adding and subtracting small numbers.

Science                We will be focussing on rocks. We will sort different types of rock and find out about their properties, such as permeability. Then we will look at how fossils are formed and link this to our English work.

PE                           Our topic for this half term will be ball games. We will practise throwing and catching and marking a

                              partner to intercept a ball.

The Arts               Year 3 will have the opportunity to learn the trumpet with Mrs Matthews. To begin, we will learn how to look after our trumpet and make a sound. Then we will move on to learning how to play notes and how to read the notation on a stave. We will also learn a variety of fun songs and musical games.

In Art, we will be looking at cave painting. We will look at the subject matter of different cave paintings and then experiment with sticks and other tools to create our own!

Humanities        In History we will study the life of Stone Age people, including foods, clothes and survival.

ICT                          We will be using Microsoft Word to edit a document. Then we will type our own text about the Stone

Age and import a picture from the internet.

Homework: Spellings have been given out for this half term. Tests will be given on a Friday and results will be sent home that day.

Children are encouraged to do as much reading at home as possible and to practice their times tables. A leaflet was sent home with some ideas of things to do at home to help children in school.

Uniform: Children will be expected to dress in full, smart uniform with shoes, not trainers. Appropriate earrings can be worn, but please no nail varnish, perfume or aftershave.

PE:  Year 3 will have PE on Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon, please ensure your child has full PE kit in school with them and remember to remove earrings and tie long hair back.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to come and see me.
