Curriculum Subjects Focus

English – We will start the term by reading ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’. We will be considering characters feelings and emotions and developing our ability to make inferences. During the second half term, we will be looking at the Diary of Anne Frank and creating our own autobiographies and biographies. We will also look at this in relation to the rights of a child as part of our Rights Respecting Schools sessions.

Maths – We will focus on skills such as problem solving, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value, angles,  fractions and decimals.

Science - We will be learning about light including: how it travels; how shadows are formed; how we see objects and how light reflects. In the second half term, we will be exploring electricity and building working circuits.

PE – We are learning the rules of hockey. We will begin by looking at basic skills building up the playing the game in small teams. During Miss Saunt's PE lessons, we will be creating our World War 2 topic based dance. We would ask that all children have their full kits ready in school. Lessons will normally be on Mondays and Tuesdays, although this can be subject to change.

The Arts – We will be looking at the work of war-time artist Henry Moore and attempting to emulate his style before developing our use of perspective.

Humanities – We will have a strong history focus of the events of World War II, looking in particular at the main events of the war and its causes, evacuation and the holocaust. Our geography will focus primarily on map skills.

ICT - We will be learning how to use spreadsheets to create, change and modify formulas to create an information database. We will also be focusing on E-Safety at the start of the half term.

In Year 5, Reading is going to become a focus and we ask that children read daily at home and record this in their home-school diary. This will be monitored weekly by us and children reading regularly at home (a minimum of 3 times a week) will be awarded with house points. Any child who has read every day of the week will be rewarded.

For your information...

Spellings: Children should have come home with spellings for Aut 1 (then Aut2) labelled for each week, please encourage them to practise these at home as they will be tested on them weekly.

If you have any questions about the year ahead, please do not hesitate to contact any of the Year 5 team.
