PE and Sport Premium

PE and Sport Premium

The Government is providing funding of £150 million per year for the academic years 2013-20 to provide new, substantial primary school sport funding.

This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Schools will have to spend the sports funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Below are possible suggestions made by the government on how to spend the funding:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
  • supporting and engaging through Change4Life clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport and using it to provide release cover for them to attend.
  • running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
  • providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs

The amount of money a school gets depends on the size. Each school will get £8000, plus £5 per child in year 1-6.  We are intending to use this funding on the below:

  • Supporting and developing staff development through the PE package DanceDesk. This organisation provides training for the PE leader within school and the staff. Access to memberships with key PE and sport associations.
  • To target vulnerable groups of children in EYFS and support their physical needs.
  • To develop active lunchtimes and play leaders.
  • To increase the participation of healthy, active lifestyles.
