For the last 2 years, 2024 and 2025, Highfields Primary School Eco Council has achieved the Eco Award with Distinction.
The Eco-Schools Green Flag Award is an international recognised accolade that celebrates schools demonstrating excellence in environmental action and sustainability. Schools recognised with this award have shown commitment to reducing waste, conserving energy, enhancing biodiversity and promoting sustainability awareness. The award is a symbol of the school’s value and vision of empowering pupils to face the future with confidence and purpose.
Eco Council is very focused on increasing the biodiversity of the school site. Several bird nesting boxes and bug hotels have been placed in the trees on the school site. Eco Council are working on building their own bug hotel from recycled pallets.
This school year Eco Council will be working towards the Woodland Trust’s Green Tree Schools Award.
We have just in Autumn 2 achieved the Bronze Award.
Another role of the Eco Council is to raise awareness within the school community of the ongoing climate crisis and the importance of looking after our environment. In November we were asked to provide a display at St Pauls Church in Blackheath.
Highfields Eco Council wanted to create a display that did not use plastic, tinsel or glitter. Eco Council created Highfields Tree of Hope using a real Christmas tree which can be planted into our school garden to be used in the future. The baubles were sustainable wooden discs from cut down trees with messages of Hope from our pupils and our decorations were natural items found and collected from our local woods. We hoped that visitors to the church who saw our tree would take some inspiration from our display and think about how they could reduce their environmental impact this Christmas.
Eco Council has achieved RHS School Gardening Award Level 4 and are working on achieving Level 5 this school year.
Please check out our school newsletters as Eco Council regularly update our school community via these and the competitions that we regularly run to encourage our families to explore the natural world around them eg. Summer Sunflower Challenge and our Autumn Tree photograph competition .
